WELCOME TO THE YMCA OF ALASKA MAT-SU
It all began …………
When community leaders, parents, educators, and citizens noticed challenges faced by Mat-Su Valley residents. This group realized the lack of resources for fitness, youth development, and social interaction was hindering community well-being. Motivated to make a positive impact, they worked to bring YMCA services to Mat-Su Valley. They believed YMCA could transform the community by providing a safe space for individuals and families while encouraging community engagement. In 2018, the YMCA of Alaska formed an Advisory Board for Mat-Su YMCA, marking the start of program development. Today, Mat-Su YMCA leads various initiatives, including Tanaina Elementary’s before and after-school program, engaging Day Camps, and comprehensive swim lessons, all aimed at enriching the community’s growth

MAT-SU SWIM LESSONS
Learning how to swim as a child is not just a fun activity, but it also holds immense importance for their safety and overall development. Swimming is a skill that can potentially save a child’s life in an emergency situation. By learning how to swim at a young age, children gain confidence and build a strong foundation of water safety and knowledge. It promotes physical fitness and coordination, as swimming engages multiple muscle groups and improves cardiovascular health. Swimming also enhances cognitive abilities, as it requires focus, problem-solving, and spatial awareness in an aquatic environment. Additionally, swimming provides a valuable opportunity for social interaction and teamwork, especially when children participate in swimming lessons or join swim teams.

WE CAN HELP!
The YMCA of ALASKA is a nonprofit, community-based, health and human services organization that is committed to helping people achieve their full potential in spirit, mind and body. The YMCA’s Open Doors program is available to people of all ages, backgrounds, abilities and incomes.
Each year the YMCA provides thousands of dollars in financial assistance to our community members in need. These funds are made possible through the generous donations from our members of the Helping Hands Club.
Joining the Helping Hands Club involves the participation of active YMCA members who generously contribute an extra $8 each month, supplementing their standard membership fees. This crucial financial support directly contributes to the enhancement of the financial assistance programs at the YMCA of Alaska, enabling families in need to access and benefit from the YMCA’s range of services and programs.
That’s why the YMCA of Alaska offers the Open Doors scholarship program. Thanks to charitable contributions, the Y’s scholarship program is a sliding fee scale designed to fit each individual’s financial situation. Our scholarship program can be applied to membership and programs like summer camp and youth sports.Â
The Scholarship program has been most utilized by:
- Youth referred by schools, churches and community organizations
- Adults who are temporarily out of work
- People who are divorced or widowed and are experiencing financial hardships
- People on fixed incomes
- People who are overwhelmed by medical bills
- People experiencing other financial hardships
